Health & Safety
The high risk nature of our activities means that the management of health and safety has always been central to the company’s work philosophy.
Our commitment is demonstrated by the presence of an accredited safety management system, detailed health and safety documentation, visible assessment and supervision which translates into exceptionally low accident rates and customer confidence.
Clifford Devlin has operated a safety management system for many years. In July 2007 it was formally registered to international standard OHSAS 18001. The system contains the procedures and control measures used to ensure all of our activities and tasks are carried out in compliance with current regulations and industry best practice with regard to safety. It also provides the framework for managing policy, planning, responsibilities, performance, measurement, review and auditing.
Our process of safety management is driven by risk assessment. A risk assessment is carried out for every project in which all hazardous elements are identified and addressed as early as possible in the project’s lifecycle. This information is recorded in documentation which is submitted to the client at the pre-tender stage and forms the basis of the procedures and measures to control safety that are implemented on-site. A daily site safety check is carried out by a site supervisor and an inspection will take place on a weekly basis by one of the company’s safety managers. Quarterly safety tours are carried out by a Director or Divisional Manager.
Auditing to comply with OHSAS18001 is conducted in accordance with the annual programme.
An Annual Safety Review is conducted to set safety objectives for the year ahead and prepare a training needs-analysis which forms the basis of the company’s safety training programme.
Our excellent safety record has seen the company awarded the prestigious International Safety Award again in 2006, this being the 30th consecutive year, by the British Safety Council. Clifford Devlin received a Gold award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) in 2008 and 2009.
Clifford Devlin is a corporate member of the British Safety Council, the Construction Health & Safety Group and the National Britannia SAFE Contractor Scheme. The company’s Health & Safety Manager, Paul Clarke-Scholes is a member of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (MIOSH).
