We’re proud to announce that our work on the major restoration of The Orchard Theatre was featured on BBC News South East last Friday, shining a spotlight on one of Kent’s most important cultural landmarks and the significant investment being made in its future.

The segment took viewers behind the scenes of the project, as BBC South East and The Stage visited the theatre to capture the scale and importance of the ongoing works. Interviews were conducted with Theatre Director Tal Rosen and Leader of Dartford Borough Council Jeremy Kite, who shared insight into the vision for the theatre, the progress being made, and the impact the restoration will have on the local community.

As a much-loved venue at the heart of Dartford’s cultural life, The Orchard Theatre holds a special place for generations of audiences. Being part of this important restoration project represents an exciting and meaningful chapter for our team, and we are proud to contribute to preserving and enhancing such a significant cultural asset.

With preparations already underway for the theatre’s reopening including the much-anticipated Cinderella pantomime on 12 December, the year ahead promises to be a special one for The Orchard Theatre and the wider community.

We look forward to continuing our involvement in this landmark project and supporting the theatre as it enters an exciting new era.

FORS Silver

Clifford Devlin has once again secured FORS – Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme Silver accreditation for another year.

FORS is a voluntary scheme that encourages fleet operators to work above industry standards, promoting safety, efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Maintaining silver shows we’re not just compliant but working to best practice. We closely monitor fuel use, emissions and environmental impact demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement.

Silver accreditation also means our vehicles carry enhanced safety features, helping protect both our drivers and road users.

This status strengthens our position when bidding for contracts that require WRRR (Work-Related Road Risk) and CLOCS (Construction Logistics and Community Safety) compliance.

Clifford Devlin remain a Carbon Neutral Business!

Working closely with Carbon Neutral Britain™, our organisation’s 2024 emissions have been measured in line with the ISO 14064 and GHG Protocol Accounting Standard. While reducing emissions remains a priority, we are also offsetting our impact through internationally certified carbon projects, supporting renewable energy, solar lighting, and sustainable agriculture worldwide.

Our latest report highlights the progress we have made. Waste related emissions fell by 4%, company vehicle emissions by 3%, and we have significantly upgraded our fleet. Last year we had just one fully electric vehicle and two hybrids. Today, we have six fully electric vehicles and four hybrids.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) commits us to halving emissions by 2030 and achieving Net Zero by 2050. By accurately measuring, offsetting, and committing to reduce our emissions each year, Clifford Devlin is not only Carbon Neutral today but also aligned with both Science Based Targets and UK Government requirements for carbon reduction. This is an important step forward, and we will continue to take action to reduce our carbon emissions as a business.

Clifford Devlin were recently featured in the news for our ongoing project at Dartford Theatre.

The Orchard Theatre in Dartford was closed in September 2023 after reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) was identified in its roof structure. Clifford Devlin was subsequently appointed to work alongside the council and key stakeholders to develop an impact mitigation strategy, which included planning for a comprehensive roof replacement.

Our refurbishment and fit-out division are currently leading the works at the theatre. Earlier phases involved our demolition, fire protection and asbestos removal teams, highlighting the efficiency of our multi-disciplinary approach. Coordinating all of our internal delivery divisions allowed for a seamless transition between project phases, ensuring steady progress.

Clifford Devlin are now a Carbon Neutral Business. We have been working closely with Carbon Neutral Britain™ who have calculated our organisations emissions, following the ISO 14064 and GHG Emissions Protocol Accounting Standard.

Whilst measuring and reducing emissions are vital – carbon offsetting is a proactive approach to environmental action, reversing the impact of emissions created now. At Clifford Devlin our annual emissions are offset through certified carbon offsetting projects.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) has set emissions reduction targets to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, in addition to suggesting ways to reduce our carbon footprint for the future – based on the largest emissions sources.

By accurately measuring, offsetting and committing to reduce emissions annually, our company will not only be Carbon Neutral but will align with both Science Based Targets and UK Government Requirements for Carbon Reduction Planning.

Mates in Mind Supporters

There is no better time to announce our new partnership with Mates In Mind than in April which is Stress Awareness Month. The campaign is designed to raise awareness about both the contributory factors and the solutions, as well as to reduce the stigma that surrounds stress and mental health.

3 in 5 employees experience mental health issues as a result of work, with construction workers 3.7 times more likely to take their own life than the average population.

As Mates in Mind supporters, Clifford Devlin will work alongside the leading charity to support and improve our workforces’ mental health. We will also be utilising the new resources on projects to tackle health inequalities and improve health and wellbeing.

By becoming a Mates in Mind Supporter, Clifford Devlin will gain access to mental health & wellbeing assessments, mental health general awareness programme – start the conversation, nationwide counsellors, communication and campaign material, technical support lines and a dedicated support manager.

Embodied Carbon Assessment

Clifford Devlin recently collaborated with FHP to conduct quantity estimation for two large office buildings located in the southwestern part of Greater London. The purpose of this estimation was to calculate the embodied carbon for the existing structures. One of the buildings, over 36 years old, has a gross floor area (GFA) of approximately 47,000 sqm, while the other, 17 years old, has a gross floor area (GFA) of approximately 11,000 sqm. This assessment was led by our Senior Estimator, Ramya Bhadri.

Global energy related CO2 , the greenhouse gas emissions are the dominant cause of global warming. Buildings are currently responsible for 39% of global energy related carbon emissions: 28% from operational emissions, from energy needed to heat, cool and power them, and the remaining 11% from materials and construction. Embodied carbon relates to the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the non-operational phase of a building project, namely the emissions released through extraction, manufacturing, transportation, assembly, maintenance, replacement, deconstruction, disposal, and end of life aspects of the materials and systems that make up a building. The only way to limit this significant climate change is by achieving net zero carbon across the built environment sector. Which is a long way to go but the good news is the journey has started.

Due to the absence of Bills of Quantity for both constructions, obtaining precise amounts from the design drawings proved challenging. Additionally, the structural drawings were limited. Despite these constraints, Ramya completed the quantity estimate for both buildings by utilizing available information and conducting a detailed site visit. The estimation focused primarily on major structures, including sub-structure and superstructure, while the interior design quantities were limited to broader categories such as partition walls, carpets, raised floors, suspended ceilings, and kitchen cabinets.

The lack of a material specification list and restrictions on an intrusive survey at the building premises prevented the accurate estimation of finer raw material specifications. Nevertheless, Ramya conducted a quantity estimate for foundational elements, columns, beams, façade systems, etc.

Ramya made diligent efforts to provide as much information as possible for the existing buildings. Additionally, she also prepared a report on the recyclable amount of materials in the event of demolition of the buildings before the end of their service life.
